Growing up in the 1980’s, in the midst of a hairspray epidemic, is how an entire generation would be introduced to an elaborate form of Heavy Metal following the rise of Black Sabbath in the 1960’s, the founding fathers of Metal music. Over the years, Metal has evolved into a ridiculous number of sub-genres, many of which cross-over into one big Heavy Metal melting pot, sometimes it’s difficult to even desicfer which beat goes where. Amongst the bickering of modern day keyboard warriors trying to confine bands to specific styles and genres, there lies the fundamental aspect as to what makes Metal music Metal? Does it make you smash your fist in the air and want to break shit? If the answer is yes, then it’s Metal, and quite frankly we don’t care what sub-genre you think it fits into anymore. Orbit Culture appears to share this very attitude with their new record, ‘Nija’.
Whilst many band’s try their hardest to combine as many different styles into one record as they can possibly cram into a mix, most fail miserably. Then, on a rare occasion, you come across an artist that manages to execute every single style into their record effortlessly. However, saying that, this record definitely isn’t for everyone. It’s a lot to take in when you give it that first spin. The guttural vocals can be overpowering at first but Orbit Culture have combined these with some beautifully melodic tones, and powerfully epic chorus sections. It’s this contrast that makes the record so dynamic and relentless.
One extremely important thing to note about Orbit Culture is their heritage. They hail from Eksjö, a municipality in Jönköping, southern Sweden. Yes, you can picture it now can’t you? Dark forests, camp fires, sun down by 3pm and pagan sacrifices from the Metal homelands of Scandinavia. This region is saturated with insanely talented musicians, and Orbit Culture is no exception. ‘Nija’ is an epic record and one you need in your collection for those cold dark winter nights!
