Canadian punk rock band, SUM 41, have had to cancel a show in Paris tonight after the band reported an explosive device was detonated close to the venue as they were loading in for soundcheck.
Whilst riots and protests have been a daily occurrence in Paris since the start of the ‘gilets jaune’ (yellow jacket) movement that started November 17, 2018, where the French people started to rebel against the government over a number of issues, there is a potentially more sinister motive behind tonight’s explosion. In 2015, 90 people were shot dead at Paris venue, Bataclan, as members of ISIS stormed the hall whilst Eagles of Death Metal were due to perform. People are no doubt concerned that tonight’s events could well be of a terrorist nature, however, they are most likely the result of local protesting.
Sum 41 made the following statement “During load-in for tonight's performance in Paris, an explosive device was detonated just outside of the venue door. Band, crew, the fans in line are all safe, and there were no injuries. Due to the intimate nature of our 'Personal Space' performances, we are unable to guarantee the safety of the fans in attendance. We are deeply saddened to announce that tonight’s show has been cancelled. More information to follow.”
It’s unclear at this stage what the cause of the explosion was or if it was a controlled explosion by local police forces. There are no reports of injury at this time. The venue seem to think it is a result of local protest.
The venue, Les Etoiles, posted to Facebook to say they believe the cause of the explosion to be due to protestors. The statement read “We regret to announce the cancellation of the concert of sum41 tonight.
2 protesters heading to place de la république lit a crackers on the street (early afternoon) and the group fear for the safety of spectators...“
Updates will follow shortly.
