IN September, The Blinders released their huge debut album, ‘Columbia’ after months of anticipation and even longer on tour. The Blinders are a three-piece group, originally from Doncaster, England who are now based in Manchester. The outfit consists of Thomas Haywood (Vocals/Guitar), Charlie McGough (Bass) and Matt Neale (Drums/Percussion).

The Blinders are loud and in your face, with visceral, political punk hand in hand with psychedelic poetry. They’re diverse and unique, their combination of music creates what they call a ‘Punkadelic’ sound which pushes the trio to give their all in frenzied performances, leaving then only the blood-stained instruments behind. They have a wide range of musical influences, from Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, The Fall and John Cooper Clarke.

In 2016, The Blinders released their first EP ‘Hidden Horror Dance’ which featured 4 tracks - 84, ICB Blues, Murder at The Ballet and You’re So Cold. This debut then lead to the release of their first official single in the same year, Swine. 2016 was a humongous year for the band, as they also played their first Manchester gig to a buzzing room of gig-goers. Since that moment, the band have picked up radio support from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Daniel P Carter, Radio X’s John Kennedy and 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins as well as Steve Lamacq who recently had the band on his show for a BBC Music Introducing live session.

The Lamacq live performance helped to spread the word that The Blinders really were about to become something special, and since then support has continued to grow. The band have also been touring constantly for the past 2 years. The Manchester-based group have supported artists such as Miles Kane, Cabbage, the Courteeners and recently headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Reading & Leeds festival, alongside playing many festival slots this season.

To tie in with the headline slot at Reading and Leeds, they unveiled the music video for ‘Brave New World’, an anthem written about the impact of hyper-capitalism, referencing everything from Trump’s presidential campaign to Aldous Huxley. ‘Brave New World’ also features on the debut album, Columbia. The debut record also features lead single, L’etat C’est Moi, which was Huw Stephens’ track of the week on Radio 1 and is in rotation on 6 music.

Columbia has been a highly-anticipated album, based around “an alternate world informed by reality”, with the band putting their intelligence on display, enlightened through history, art and literature as much as they are by Britain’s political and economic climate. The cover of ‘Columbia’ depicts lead singer, Thomas, in the warpaint which he usually wears at live shows.

The album, produced by Gavin Monaghan, sees us follow Haywood’s live persona Johnny Dream on a spiritual awakening, from the swagger of opening track ‘Gotta Get Through’ to the redemption of finale ‘Orbit (Salmon of Alaska).

The Blinders are definitely a band to keep your eye on and as the band are set to embark on their 22 date UK tour this month, they also enjoy the achievement of their debut LP currently sitting within the top 10 of the official vinyl charts and support is evergrowing.
